In a time when the state government seems to be strapped for cash and the governor continues to endorse an expansion of gambling as a way to fill the coffers, it’s interesting to note that Kentucky has the fourth lowest tax on beer in the nation. According to the Factbook of State Beer Taxes produced by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the tax on beer is just 8 cents per gallon in the commonwealth.
The tax rate, which hasn’t been changed since 1982, compares to $1.07 per gallon in Alaska (the state with the highest beer tax), 92 cents in Hawaii and 77 cents in South Carolina. Wyoming has the lowest beer tax at just 2 cents per gallon.
