Kentucky Baptist Convention churches that use Sunday school material from LifeWay Christian Resources focused on sanctity of human life issues during their lesson time today. This happens annually as the Southern Baptist Convention seeks to draw attention to this important topic during January of each year.
This year, the KBC Committee on Public Affairs wants to encourage Kentucky Baptists to not just let their focus on this issue die away with the end of a Sunday school lesson. This year, there is a real and practical step that each Kentucky citizen can take to have an important impact on a real sanctity of life issue!
Earlier this month, the Kentucky Senate approved legislation that would require an abortionist to give a woman who is considering ending her pregnancy the opportunity to see an ultrasound of her developing baby before making a final irreversible decision.
The bill passed overwhelmingly in the Senate (32-5) and could be expected to also pass the House of Representatives if it ever came to a vote.
But here’s the rub. Similar bills have previously passed the Senate but pro-abortion leadership in the House of Representatives typically sends the bill to a committee that never allows it to see the light of day on the floor of the House.
If this situation is ever to be rectified it is vital that citizens let their state representatives know that they want this bill to come to a vote. Elected officials generally read the lack of phone calls on the part of voters in their district on any given issue as meaning that people really don’t care strongly about an issue no matter what they may say in a formal poll. Politicians care about and give attention to those issues on which they hear from voters.
Therefore, if you believe in supporting life and believe that this bill is a good one, you really need to make a phone call. And the thing is, contacting legislators is really easy even if you don’t know the names of the individuals you are trying to reach. Just call the legislative message line at 800-372-7181. The operator will identify your representative for you within just a few seconds and take your message. And, if you ask your message to be copied to Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg, and other House leaders, they will get your message as well. The entire process is quick and easy.
Don’t let your support for the unborn be limited to a Sunday school lesson. This year, make a difference.
