Alcohol Expansion Petitions Being Filed

The KBC Committee on Public Affairs has recently received the following report from Don Cole, executive director or the Kentucky League on Alcohol and Gambling Programs (Kentucky Ethics League), regarding upcoming alcohol sales expansion petitions in Kentucky:

The Kentucky League on Alcohol & Gambling Problems has been informed that a petition for a local option election to allow all types of alcohol sales is being circulated in Owen County which is in North Central Kentucky, next to Gallatin County which is the home of the Kentucky Speedway. The petition has not been filed with the County Clerk at this time, so no date has been set for an election. A total of 901 qualified signatures will be necessary in order to file the petition with the County Clerk, A local pastor, Rev. Steve Delaney of Beech Grove Baptist Church, contacted the League for information on organizing a group to oppose the expansion of alcohol sales into Owen County. Please pray for the citizens of Owen County, Rev. Delaney, and the successful organization of the opposition group. We pray that many workers will come forward to assist in the opposition efforts and they will be successful in their campaign to protect the quality of life in Owen County.

In addition, we have learned that the city of Earlington in Hopkins County which is in Western Kentucky, has circulated a petition for a local option election to allow all types of alcohol sales. The petition needed only 180 qualified signatures and has been filed with the County Clerk. The election is set for Tuesday, March 29. Rev. Bob Morrison, Director of Missions for Little Bethel Association of Baptists, informed the League of this petition and requested information on how to organize a group to oppose the expansion of alcohol in this area. Rev. Morrison also advised us that a petition for a local option election is also being circulated in the city of Nortonville in southern Hopkins County, Please pray for the citizens of Earlington, Nortonville, Rev. Morrison, and the successful organization of opposition groups.

We pray that many workers will come forward to assist in the opposition efforts in all these areas and that they will be successful in their campaigns to protect the quality of life in Owen County and in the cities of Earlington and Nortonville in Hopkins County.
