Ultrasound Bill Prefiled for 2011 Session

A bill to require an abortionist to allow a woman to see an ultrasound of her baby before the pregnancy is ended has been prefiled in the Kentucky Senate by Sen. Jack Westwood, R-Erlanger (Senate District 23). The bill is a good one in that it ensures that a woman has full information about the irreversible action she is considering prior to making a final commitment.

Sen. Jack Westbrook

The bill is similar to legislation that has been proposed and failed in the past. The proposal is typically approved by the state Senate but never gets a hearing before the full House of Representatives because pro-abortion leadership there shuffles it over to a committee with a pro-abortion chairman who ensures that it dies without ever being reported out.

The KBC Committee on Public Affairs will be following this bill closely this year and will use this blog to share the action taken on the legislation. We’ll provide the contact information for all leaders and committee members involved in the decision-making process. Changes brought to the make-up of the General Assembly by the November elections may increase the chances of this bill’s passage in 2011.

The General Assembly goes into session on Jan. 4 for what will be a short, 30-day session.
