Governor, Senator Ready With Casinos Bill

Sen. Damon Thayer

News media are reporting that Gov. Steve Beshear has come to an agreement with Sen. Damon Thayer, R-Georgetown, on the language for a bill calling for a constitutional amendment to expand gambling. The governor has previously said that he wants an amendment that would allow up to nine casinos across the state.

Thayer has not said when he would file the bill but legislators are already about a quarter way through this year’s session so the bill will have to be filed soon if it is to have any shot at passage. The Family Foundation of Kentucky says the governor does not have the 16 votes he needs in the state Senate to get the bill passed but things can change quickly in Frankfort once politicians begin wheeling and dealing.

Please call the toll-free Legislative Message Line at (800) 372-7181 and leave a kind but firm phone message for your state senator. (The receptionist will help you with who your senator is when you tell her your county). Leave this message: “Stand against any expansion of gambling.”

The message line is open 7 a.m. – 11 p.m. EST Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday.
