Resolution Opposes Gambling Expansion

The Crittenden Baptist Association recently approved a strongly-worded resolution opposing gambling expansion proposals in the Kentucky General Assembly.

Here’s the text:

We the churches of the Crittenden Baptist Association, members of the Kentucky Baptist Convention, and the Southern Baptist Convention, do admonish you the legislative and executive branches of this great Commonwealth of Kentucky, to uphold the sanctity of the family and the moral teachings of our Almighty God, by which you ask for blessings on this governing body, to extinguish the vices and destructive influences of gambling from our great state.

WHEREAS, we believe the Bible to be the inerrant Word of Almighty God, and thus our government and constitution founded on the Judeo-Christian principles;

WHEREAS, the influences of gambling destroy homes and lives;

WHERE AS, the God ordained purpose for government outlined in Romans 13: 1-5 is to protect the welfare of its citizenry and suppress evil;

WHEREAS, we believe that gambling is a regressive tax that affects mainly the poorest of society, yet is not limited to that class and perpetuates social ills, placing families, individuals, businesses, and government at a greater risk for negative outcomes not limited to but, including higher rates of divorce, bankruptcy, child abuse, domestic violence, crime, and suicide, and these social problems increase as gambling expands it’s reaches into society;

WHEREAS, gambling is a terrible example of the stewardship of God given resources, and a poor means of acquiring material gain by chance of a neighbors expense, and does fosters such social ills as greed, crime and poverty and is a destructive influence of good government;

WHEREAS, 1 Timothy 6:9-10 states, “People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

WHEREAS, you are accountable to the Almighty God for your decision in this matter and we plead with you as a warning to fail in this way,

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that this body of the Crittenden Baptist Association in accordance with the Word of the Lord opposes gambling in any form and expresses complete opposition to expanded gambling in this the Commonwealth of Kentucky;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Crittenden Baptist Association will inform its members and the general public of the Commonwealth of Kentucky of this resolution and the actions of the Honorable Governor Steve Beshear and Honorable Senator Damon Thayer in this matter, and work to educate all of the said above individuals about the vices of gambling on Kentucky families and the need to aggressively oppose these things that lead to the destruction thereof.
